Went to a meeting this morning, but I also took a brief walk back in time

I had the opportunity to go into what is incorrectly referred to as the Old Union Station building down on Saint John Street this morning for a meeting, what a neat old building. I would have loved to have seen it as a train station. I want to go back just to photograph, but here is one Photograph that I did get after my meeting.

The building at 222 Saint John Street was not the station itself, but it was the Maine Central Railroad General Office Building. The station was next door (where Maine hardware is now) and it was torn down in 1961 so a lame strip mall (that now sits half empty) could be built. The demolition of the station irked some Portlanders, and that is what started the preservation movement in Portland, and the creation of Greater Portland Landmarks.

This past week has been a busy one, with getting ready for a last minute show which is now hanging at Gauchos Brazilian Steakhouse 100 Commercial St. Portland, ME, for more information you on my show you can go here. Also with the past few days of rainy weather I have been really inspired, so I have been photographing a lot especially at night, you can see some photographs over on my website, and there are more below as well. This week I have been trying my hand at some digital pinhole photography with my DSLR after I came across this blog post earlier in the week. It has been very neat experimenting with it and getting the pinhole “just right”, not too big/small, getting a perfectly round hole etc. The whole digital thing is great because I am not wasting a bunch of film, though this digital pinhole work has showed me just how dirty my sensor is with what looks like a water mark or ring, and a bunch of other crap. So this week I am going to pick up a sensor cleaning kit and try cleaning it myself, but I am not looking forward to doing this task.

September Canoe Trip

Last weekend a buddy and I went out on a 2 night canoe trip on Scraggly and Junior Lakes here in eastern Maine. It was supposed to be a 3 night trip, but Hurricane Earl got in the way of the first day. Turns out Earl was nothing to really worry about, anyway we set out last Saturday (9/4) before the storm completely ended.

The first half of Saturday it rained, but the winds were calm, but they started to build a bit (due to a cold front that was following Earl). Around noon we stopped for a break to stretch our legs and make a cup of coffee and warm up. By the time we set out again there where patches of blue a good sign. The winds where still building, but they where at our backs, I even took out the umbrella and did some sailing. We reached camp with plenty of day light to spare.

All night long the winds blew, that morning breaking camp leisurely to say the least, with a feeling of apprehension coming from my buddy. The winds where not building any more, but they where sustained, with higher gusts from time to time. I am very comfortable on the water (I have been canoeing and kayaking for over 18 years mainly sea kayaking on the ocean, and I have been boating for longer than that), but I felt bad for my friend, because we where going to be fighting the winds all day, I gave him some pointers on dealing with the wind, and we put a large rock in the bow of his boat, and moved his gear as far forward as possible to keep the bow lower in the water so that it would not catch the wind as much.

At one point I turned around to see how he was doing, and the wind was spinning him round and round, I told him earlier in the day that if a gust is too much to handle just stop paddling until the gust stops then regain your course as a way to save energy, and to keep a sane mind. When he reached me we switched canoes with the thinking that it would be easier for him in my canoe. It was a tough slog.

We stopped for a break at the thoroughfare between Scraggly and Junior Lakes, we only had about less than 2 miles to go before we reached our second nights campsite so I suggested that we keep moving, because it looked like we where not going to have to battle the winds head on, but yes they had changed by the time we got back on the water and out on to Junior Lake.

Canoeing into the wind is like sailing (for me), you do not head into the wind head on you tack (zigzag) because you let the wind work with you as much as you can. Anyway we had we had the winds in our faces again, now with the skies spitting scattered showers at us. By the time we rounded McKinney Point I realized that my friend had enough, and frankly so did I, but the island with our campsite was in view. By the time we reached camp we where beat. We set up camp, had dinner, watched the sun set and had an early night.

Our last day dawned sunny and cool with light winds that soon started to build. I made a cup of coffee and found a nice sunny spot on the lee ward side of a boulder for some meditation before a breakfast of curried rice. We where on the water relatively early, and the wind was not in our face (yet), so we did some exploration before we started out last leg of our journey, but sure as shit the wind picked up even more, and to say the least it was variable coming from the side then the back then we fought it till the very end. the short time that the wind was coming from behind we made good time, so much so that I called my father to tell him to pick us up at the Duck lake boat launch 2 hours early, by some freak good fortune I was able to get a good enough cell phone signal at the far end of Duck Lake (my phone works great on any other lake in the area but Duck Lake)

On the way back to my fathers house we picked up some beer at Raymonds (a local general store), that evening we had plenty of beer a good dinner and a cake that my father had made and then we sat down and watched Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations all night long it just happened to be a marathon (I usually cannot stand TV marathons, but for his show I will make an exception), great surprise planning on our part we even got to see his 100th episode, I want a TV and cable just for his show.

Last night here in Portland Maine we had a great public art event with a great vibe, it was hosted by Space Gallery they had a block party here on Congress Street. The night was filled with: block printing with a steam roller (just that faint smell of the ink put a smile on my face), art, music, seeing old friends and seeing some new friends too. There was so much going on it was hard to see all of it, but here is some of what I saw

A trip to my home waters.

A week ago I was just finishing up a week long trip down to Connecticut for my stepfathers 70th birthday celebration that my mother had organized, and some time at the family cottage that is close to their house. At times there was waaay too many people for my liking, so that is when I found myself in my kayak, or taking a walk around the island where the cottage is, or re exploring the small patch of woods that fortunately still exist behind my parents house. Dry River Backpacking Trip 5/22-24

This past weekend a friend and I set out to hike the Dry River Trail in the White Mountains, we where planning on going to Lake Of The Clouds, and back to the trail head on route 302. Total trip in and back was about 19 miles over three days (a fairly tame trip). All the info that I was able to find pre-trip, was all true: A brand new bridge was built at the first river crossing, the trail going in was all up hill, the upper part of the trail is rather tricky / strenuous mainly because of many blowdowns, it could be pretty muddy, and the second river crossing could be impassible if water is high (no bridge).

Remarkably we left Portland just about on time on Saturday morning, and about two hours later we were at the trailhead packs on and ready to go. Our first day was supposed to be our longest day. We made the bridge in good time, stopped had a snack, a peek at the map, and some photos. I knew that after the bridge the “trip” really began. We Donned our packs and set off.

The trail narrowed, and started to climb following the river bed. Up and down following the river crossing many small tributaries and springs (the muddy / wet part). Yes, I am a rather big person, but I like to stay active, I walk every day and hike, kayak / canoe, backpack any chance I can, but when we started to come across the blowdowns they slowed me right up. By 5pm we were beat, and we had made 3/4 of our planned day, but we stopped for the night after finding a suitable spot. At this point we knew that we would not be able to finish our intended trip, so at dinner we planned a loop trip on some of the more used trails to ease the trip a bit and to make the most of our time that we had left, but it all depended on the second river crossing.

After a sleepless night for both of us due to the fast loud river (all night long you could hear the current shifting rocks about like marbles), we had coffee, confirmed our route, and broke camp. We headed up the river on the trail, it looked like we had gotten through most of the blowdowns, and we got to a river crossing. We crossed it, and we where on the trail again, thinking wow that was pretty sweet, but we soon realized that that was just a tributary, because after scurrying down a steep trail, we met the second river crossing.

Immediately my hiking partner said no it is not crossable, (for him anyway) I knew that is wasn’t either, it was fast and deep, but we did some scouting and still it looked iffy at best, and we both realized that it was a risk that was not worth taking. I was so bummed, there had to be a way, because we had three groups of hikers go past us the previous day and they all where following the same route as us, though while breaking camp earlier my hiking partner said that he saw one couple heading back down trail, maybe they did not cross (too bad we did not talk to them, I do not think they even saw our camp). Bummed out we filled up on water and had a bite to eat and turned around to head out. we knew that the trail was going to be down hill, but neither of us really wanted to do it because it had a few funky sections to scramble down (turned out to be fine). but we did not have a choice, so we turned around, but we also knew that there was a good possibility of making the trail head by dark if we wanted.

After recrossing the little tributary we had to climb out of the river valley, on the way up I noticed my left boot felt different, but I did not really think anything of it, but at the top I heard “flap flap”, and that is when I noticed that the sole of my boot was coming off. I called up the trail to my buddy that I had a problem, and I sat down to assess the situation. After: not having enough sleep, not being able to cross the river, now my boots where falling apart in front of my eyes, I had a few choice words.

After closing my eyes and meditating for a few moments, I had some water, and reached for the duct tape, I realized that this was not a life threatening situation being that it was spring and not in the middle of winter, it was just a major inconvenience that had potential to go bad. After about 50 feet the tape came off, so we had to stop again.

I carry some duct tape, but not nearly enough to do any major boot repair especially when dealing with rough, wet, muddy trails, so out came a knife and some parachute cord. At this point the whole front half of the sole had come unbonded with the heel starting to come off. So we tied some parachute cord right in the middle of my boot to hold the hard plastic shank in place and to keep the heel half in place for as long as possible, then we cut the front part of the sole completely off so that it would not trip me up. A Little further down the trail, the shank punched right through the bottom of the toe box of my boot. Eventually the back part of the sole came off so I had hardly any traction other than what the shank and the few wraps of parachute cord was able to provide. This made for some slow going especially on the loose stuff, and bare / wet rocks. Thankfully it was down hill which made the blowdowns a lot easier, but it made the tricky spots even more trickier.

We covered much ground, and now we realized that we could have made the trail head by dark, but we are glad that we did not, because we camped at a great designated campsite the second night. That night we had a good dinner (the dehydrated backpacking meals have gotten a lot better recently, which is great news, and some are even organic), and a fire I usually do not have a fire that is why I carry a stove, and a lot of the time I am too tired to deal with one, but this was a great spot, and it had a well used fire ring so we made a quick fire and listened to the river flow. The next morning we had some coffee and broke camp, within two hours we where at the trail head.

Looking back now a few days later it was a good thing that we were not able to cross the river, because it made it that much easier to make it back out, because who knows where my boot would have given out if we crossed. Passed the second river crossing heading to lake of the clouds I believe we would have hit some snow, and that could have been very bad, not to mention we would have been further up.

If my boots completely broke down (i.e. shank broke / came out) I could have worn my cheap o sandals which I bring as camp shoes, or if I have to cross a river. I was strongly against using my sandals especially with a pack on and with the trail conditions (maybe if they where my Tevas or my Keens I would have tried it). Yes, they would have provided the needed traction, but not the support, and I did not want to risk a twisted ankle.

I was kind of surprised that the soles came apart, because before the trip I cleaned and conditioned them, in doing so I looked them over pretty good. In all reality I am not too surprised, because they were over 12 or more years old. The one thing the kinda got me though is that right before this trip I got pair of really good insoles and they cost $15 or so, but before I tossed the boots I grabbed them, the left one is a little beat up but it is still usable, and now regular shoes feel great, but not I am looking for a good pair of backpacking boots.

Since I have some trouble with my knee I hike with poles, but I have been hiking with poles for along time even when my knee was not a bother, because I feel that they are helpful. Yes, they can get in the way at times, but I was so thankful that I had them on this trip with only one good boot to walk out on.

A few notable things: It is incredible to see huge change in the season even with a slight change in elevation the best way to see this is to look at the first nights campsite, and then look at the second nights site. Moose amaze me we saw so much scat at times in some of the craziest spots, well crazy for me at least because I think of them as low land dwellers, though I am apparently wrong. Speaking of moose we saw the largest print that I have ever seen. We also came across a large cat track that was very neat see. As like every year black flies think I am very tasty, but I do have to use more bug spray even though I don’t like to, though this natural stuff that I brought worked really well.

We are going to try this trip later in the year when the water goes down, but until then we are already in the planning stages for our next trip so if any one has some trails to recommend here in New England please let me know. And oh ya I am looking for some good backpacking boot recommendations too.

Here are some photographs from this past weekend from a trip up to visit my father in Lee, Maine. This time of year is a really neat time because if you go about 3 hours north of Portland, you will go about two or three weeks back into spring. Up North I walked through that little window in spring when the black flies have not started yet, and the weather was warm. Back here in Portland a good majority of the trees are starting to flower / leaf, I love the early spring this year.

Why I carry a camera just about every where, and why I need to slow down. . .

Here is another good reason why I carry a camera just about every where, because you never know when something will grab your eye even when you walk by the same buildings just about everyday.

Last night I went out to check out this months First Friday, I stopped by a few of my favorite galleries here in the city, but I decided to go for a walk instead. I walk every day and, and I have my “main” loop through the city, so I picked it up and walked home.

I walk fast. I do not like to meander, but I am always looking for the next shot, I see plenty of photographs. I am not the type that just shoots away because hey it is digital and you can (except for certain circumstances). When I go out to photograph I treat digital as if it was film. I only have so many exposures on this “roll”, and I have no more film on me.

Just the other night I went out, but I forgot my memory card in my computer, thankfully, my LX3 has a little internal memory about enough for about 4 raw files. It was very limiting, but a good challenge too, and it makes you really think about what you are shooting

When I am out for a walk, a photograph really has to jump out and whap me upside my head for me to stop, even then sometimes I don't stop but I am getting better at making my self stop (because I have been missing some good shots) even if it means turning around like this shot from last night.

Obama's Visit to Portland, Maine

So Obama paid us a visit here in Maine this afternoon, and here are some of the pictures.I will say this I voted for Obama, no he is not perfect, but he was the better one for the job at the time, and he does have his flaws and there is still ~~some~~ hope.

My best shot of the day, here is our change, it is not going to come from any politician, it is going to come from the people, because we all know politicians are just puppets that get caught up in the strings.

With over 4 inches of rain and wind for the last few days we are finally coming out of the car wash here in Portland Maine and the North East, It looks like we will be rewarded this weekend with sun and temps close to 70. I don't mind the rain, I like it for photography, and I seem to be a little happier when it is rainy, don't get me wrong I love the sun too, but... a rainy city street at night is magical.

My rainy weather street photography setup:

My LX3 with bare essentials
Poncho-ed Camera Bag (see photo below)
Rain jacket
Umbrella (depending on rain intensity and wind, I find more often than not it just is in the way unless it is pouring buckets.)
warm socks, and sandals (thankfully it is getting warm enough for sandals), or something warmer if it really cold.
Rain pants can be helpful if it is cold, but I usually just wear quick drying hiking pants, in warm weather shorts are best for me, as long as I keep my "core" warm and fairly dry I am happy
A spare Ziploc bag for your camera if shit really hits the fan
A small towel for your gear and your hands

Tips for shooting in the rain (yes some are common sense):

Don't be afraid, your camera can take more than you think, with in reason of course
Use a slightly bigger camera bag, the less that you have to fidget to take your camera out, or put it away the better
shake the water off of your sleeve before you open your camera bag so water does not run down your arm and into the bag
If your hands are really wet wipe them off before reaching for any gear
if you get some rain on your camera don't freak out, just wipe it off
When you get home take the camera out of the bag for a while to let any moisture dry out.

Since yesterday was a wash, not weather wise, (it was actually quite beautiful, sunny and 70), but for other reasons I was not able to welcome spring the way I wanted to. This morning I went out and did some meditation, and went for a nice walk to the East end of town. Today's weather was not as nice as yesterday (overcast with sunny breaks and in the mid 40's), but it was more fitting for spring here in Maine.

Like I said I live in Portland Maine, Portland is a small city, though I have heard it said that Portland is a large town too and well . . . I have to agree at times. Living in Portland I do not have a car nor do I really need one (yes it is a pain at times), I walk or use the Metro to get around. I walk every where not only because I don't have a car, but also because I like to walk.

Just recently I set aside my DSLR, and I picked up a little Panasonic Lumix LX3, for my street / scouting camera. Oh I still will use my DSLR, but only when I need it or when I want to change things up. The LX3 is a good street camera with a fast lens, good glass, and small, yes it has its limitations, but it is opening me up to new things as a photographer, because it is not so much about the equipment that one lugs around, But how one sees.
